The Logistics of Sci-Fi: Why is Logistics Important?
Logistics is a crucial topic—both for armies and for economies. "An army marches on its stomach," said Napoleon. No matter how great a strategic genius you are, if you cannot feed, clothe, and arm your troops while fighting far from home, you cannot win a war with a hungry, unequipped, and unarmed army. In fact, Napoleon, who famously uttered these words, suffered his greatest defeat in the Russian winter precisely because he failed to manage his food and clothing logistics.
The most reliable way to supply an army is to procure what you need from your homeland. Pillaging the occupied territory is also an option, but it makes little sense in modern warfare. Because... well, good luck finding an "XM250 light machine gun" in a looted village. Furthermore, the clothes and food you hope to find might be burned by the occupied population before you even arrive.
SO, your most reliable source of supply is always your own territory. And you must somehow transport the materials you produce at home to your army. This is precisely where logistics comes into play.
Your challenge: delivering the manufactured supplies to your army on time. And, of course, you must be able to do so safely. After all, you will be passing through occupied enemy territory. Especially today, it is unthinkable for a country to produce every single good it needs on its own. Every nation must import the goods it cannot produce and export what it can in order to pay for those imports. And here we face a similar problem:
The goods you produce must reach their destination port on time. And ideally, you want to do this without getting bombed on the way by Iran or the US, or seized by Somali pirates. Those who control the security of your cargo have more power over your goods than you do. In other words, they can leave you starving, unequipped, and unarmed.
These are the logistical problems we experience on Earth. Now, let's scale them up to space.
Let's start measuring distances not in kilometers, but in Astronomical Units (AU, the distance between the Earth and the Sun) and Light-Years (LY).
Within our solar system, our problems are still not relatively insurmountable. I am assuming that humanity has unified and that we haven't made contact with extraterrestrial beings. Our logistical challenges consist merely of transporting goods and people between Earth and the colonies within the Solar System.
We produce aluminum and glass on a massive scale on the Moon. The materials manufactured on the Moon are shipped up to the "Earth Economic Union" space station in lunar orbit. This station serves as a storage depot. Space shuttles from Earth transport the goods from this station to another space station in Earth's orbit, and then return to collect new cargo from the Moon. A single round trip takes about 10 days.
Similar systems exist in our colonies on Mars and the moons of Jupiter. Travel times vary between 6 months and 2 years. The economy expanding from an Earth-bound scale to a Solar System scale means that logistical problems will grow accordingly.
Because we are now conducting transportation on a much larger scale, waiting times skyrocket. For instance, a uranium mine on Mars would have to wait at least a year for a replacement part needed to repair broken equipment. During this time, the mine cannot operate, which harms production across the entire interplanetary system. The only way to prevent such situations is to keep a massive inventory of spare parts in reserve, which drastically increases the capital setup costs for new enterprises. Consequently, this can lead to monopolization.
Another issue is who controls the transportation. Undoubtedly, a transport operation on a Solar System scale is exorbitantly expensive—an undertaking only feasible for massive megacorporations and governments. This implies that individual travel and relocation in space would not be accessible to the general public. In other words, the mobility of all humanity rests in the hands of three or four companies and a few governments.
Having so few companies monopolize an entire industry shifts political and social balances as well. A single company could starve an entire planet just by refusing a few transport shipments. Or leave them unequipped and unarmed.
These are the scenarios that could unfold assuming we DO NOT leave the Solar System. I am still working on the essay regarding interstellar logistics, which is what I really want to dive into. However, I wanted to share this piece so my page wouldn't stay empty.
